The silent way

The silent method is an approach to language teaching that is based on subordinating teaching to learning. It was developed by Caleb Gattegno, an Egyptian teacher working in London in the 1950s.

The overall goal of Silent Way is to help beginner-level students acquire basic fluency in the target language, with the ultimate goal of achieving native language proficiency and good pronunciation.

An important part of this skill is being able to use the language to express themselves; students must be able to express their thoughts, feelings and needs in the target language.

To help them achieve this, teachers emphasize self-reliance. Students are encouraged to actively explore the language and develop their own "internal criteria" as to what is linguistically acceptable.

The silent mode makes to use of specialized teaching materials: colored Cuisenaire sticks, the sound color chart, word charts, and Fidel charts.

Cuisenaire rods are made of wood and come in ten different lengths, but with an identical cross-section; each length has its own assigned color. The rods are used in a wide variety of classroom situations. In the beginning stages they can be used to practice colors and numbers, and then they can be used in more complex grammar.

A chart consisting of columns of text in various colors, the Fidel chart is used to teach English, these charts are used to teach spelling.

The sound color chart consists of colored blocks, with one color representing a sound in the language being learned. The teacher uses this chart to help teach pronunciation; in addition to pointing to the colors to help students with the different sounds, the teacher can also play particular colors very loudly to help students learn to stress words.

Student Focus: Instead of the teacher being the center of attention, the student takes the lead role. The teacher speaks as little as possible, and the student is encouraged to express him/herself in the foreign language as much as possible.

Visual Tools: Color bars and graphics are used as teaching tools. These visual elements help students understand concepts and linguistic structures.
Learning Process: The student experiments with the language, creating sentences or combinations of sounds. The teacher provides critical feedback on the experiments, pointing out errors or deficiencies. The student corrects himself and continues experimenting until the assertion is adequate and correct.

(In class we create a story with cuisenaries)

My story was about my mom and my cat going to the grocery store and my cat told my mom that fish was her favorite food and if I bought her fish she would make dinner.

In summary, the silent method focuses on learner autonomy, active experimentation, and language awareness. It is an interesting approach that puts the learner in the driver's seat during the learning process.馃専
